The House of ShadowLore

King of the Trollhaunt Warrens

The small town of Moonstair lies on the far frontier of the barony of Therund. A central stop on the north-south trade road, Moonstair was the site of an ancient portal to the Feywild.

East of the town lies the dangerous wilderness known as The Trollhaunt – a maze of swampland, thickets, gullies, and forested ridges. In ages past, this area was part of a land called Vardar, a violent realm of troll war-clans and the monsters that served them. Vardar fell into ruin centuries ago, leaving only dank barrows and a few fog-shrouded stone forts to mark its existence. The trolls and other foul creatures dwelling in the Trollhaunt degenerated into savagery, preying on each other and any travelers foolish enough to venture into their lands. However, things in the Trollhaunt are about to change…

The great troll chieftain Skalmad has put an end to the feuds and squabbling of his kin, using ancient fomorian magic to declare himself King of the Trollhaunt. Now, Skalmad and his monstrous followers are turning their malice toward neighboring human lands. For the first time in centuries, the trolls of the Trollhaunt have a leader with the will and wits to forge his lesser fellows into a conqurering army. Vardar lives again, and if nothing is done to check Skalmad’s power, Moonstair will be just the first of many settlements to fall.

Gettin' Gassed

The party ventured into the Chamber of Howling Winds where they were able to disrupt the magical vortex. Within the chamber they found a scattering of coins, gems, residuum and items; among which were Master Keda’s staff, Abraxus’ dagger and two keys. One key was made of mithral and had “The night is mine” written in Elven. The second was an adamantine key with Draconic writing on it.

From there they ventured west into the Heart of Madness where the stone passageways gave way to slick, gray flesh. There they battled against a pair of foulspawn and their pets. The chamber appeared to quickly consume the first of the fallen and seemed to come to life as the passageways sealed shut and a poionous gas started to fill the chamber. As quickly as they could, the group finished off their opponents and tore through the walls to escape the chamber.

From there they made their way back through the tunnels, past a staircase leading up to the next level and through the chambers of ice where they found the lair of a white dragon. The dragon looked to have been recently slain and its heart cut out and whatever treasure horde it may have once possessed was now gone, but for one lone gold coin.

Satisfied that they were leaving no dangers at their back, the group then made their way up to the next level of the pyramid where they took a passageway to the west and north. There they entered a small bed chamber and found Karavakos who cried out “No! It’s not time yet!” and fled behind a curtain. As most of the group entered to confront the tiefling, the chamber was sealed off by a wall of force and a toxic gas started to fill the room. The party struggled desperately to escape the trap and when it seemed that the end was near for Kris and Kayle, they finally managed to stop the flow of gas and escape from the room.

After the trap was destroyed, an illusionary wall in the hallway vanished to reveal a short passageway leading to a set of doors. They opened the doors to find a narrow passage leading to the north and south. The walls of this place were black stone with hideous, tormented forms seeming to writhe within them. A horrifying, soul-wrenching shriek emanated from the trapped souls. They pointed at the party and banged on the walls, desperate to escape.

Steeling themselves for whatever horrors this new place might bring, the party entered the Maze of Lost Souls…

Filth, Fur and Foulspawn
After leaving the Arborean grove, the party made their way through the twisting halls of the pyramid. As they passed through one hallway where there stood two statues of robed figures, the floor suddenly flipped up to throw them into the pit of the Charnel Lord – an otyugh infused with necrotic energy. The party was able to defeat the Charnel Lord and make their way out of its filth-filled pit, and then make their way out of the trapped chamber. The charnel lord
Werewolf They then continued to wind their way through the halls and chambers of the pyramid, but was soon attacked by a wandering werewolf. The werewolf was put down without much difficulty, but not before biting Thorn and Kris, inflicting them with the Moon Frenzy disease.

After a brief rest, they continued on and found their way to the second level of the pyramid. There they figured out how to pass through the three magical doorways which then granted access to explore further in this level. A bit more wandering brought them to ramshackle dwellings of the foulspawn led by Medragal.

Medragal looked to be performing a ritual with a large heart at their central statue and called for his people to kill the intruders. A tough and bloody battle ensued with Medragal continually spouting claims of being “infused with the powers of the dragon”. In the end, Medragal fled the battle when all of his people lie dead.

More Victims for the Pyramid

Anarion, Kayle, Kris and Thorn enter the Pyramid looking for the other members of the House and to help stop Karavakos.

After roaming through the halls they found the section held by the Arboreans and their allies. They killed the guards in one of their defensive chambers, then moved on to kill their leader Camnor. A last stand defense was made in the Arboreans sacred grove and the party was forced to retreat and rest. After regaining their strength, they went back and finished off the last of the defenders.
